As we all are very well aware, water sustains life. It is essential to our well being. How then can we learn a little more about the water that comes from our taps and that we use constantly on a daily basis? Where can we go to get the truth about what’s in our water supply?
Where does our drinking water come from?
If you live in a largely populated area, its most likely that your water comes from a source such as a reservoir, lake or river. This is known as a surface water source. This is not necessarily a water source in your immediate area, but can come from many miles away. Should you just be looking at the particular body of water though to see if your water is good? No, you also want to look at the surrounding area of the water source. What is the land around it like? Is it used for farmland or are there factories etc. nearby. This area around the water source is known as the water shed.
In areas that are more rural however, the water may come from another source, such as a well. Water from these wells come from a natural underground reservoir. In this case as well, the surrounding area should be considered.
It can seem very daunting to know how to find out more about your drinking water, and we will be addressing this in further blogs. If you would like a more comprehensive look at the water in your area, get in touch with your waters supplier. Since 1999 every community water supplier must have a annual report available to its customers. This report shows where the water comes from and any contaminates that are in the water.
