The month of December for many means some welcome time off to enjoy with friends and family. Since there is typically more time spent in the home, there is naturally an increased risk of accidents in the home. That being said, we thought it was a good time for some home safety reminders.

What are some safety concerns to think about?

  • Keeping an attentive watch on small children is most important. Sharp things like scissors and knives should be well out of their reach. Poinsettias are a beautiful plant that is popular this time of year, but were you aware they are poisonous? Keep them in a place that children and pets cannot access.
  • A fireplace is a beautiful and often essential thing to have on frigid winter days. Have you checked it lately to make sure its in good working order? Also, check to see if the flue is open. If you have combustible items around the fireplace, remove them before lighting the fire.
  • Fire, as we regularly discuss can be big problem in the home. Candles should never be left unattended in a room. Make sure they are nowhere near flammable materials. String lights should be checked thoroughly for any signs of frayed wires or broken bulbs etc. This is particularly important if they have been in storage.
  • Now would be a fitting time to test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Do they need batteries? It would be wise to go through the home to see if there are potential fire hazards. Some major fire risks are leaving the stove unattended. If you are having guests, will there be smokers in the house? Make sure that no cigarette butts still smoldering in the garbage.

We are aware that these are rather basic reminders, but they are easy to overlook when you are having fun.
