With the long winter months ahead, a warm home is a huge priority.  If you use an above ground oil tank to heat your home, is it in good shape?  What are some simple ways to check if it might be damaged or leaking?  Let’s consider some easy ways to tell if your above ground oil tank is leaking.

One easy check that can be made is to have a look at the area surrounding the oil tank.  Is there a strong smell of oil?  If your tank sits on grass or vegetation, does it look discolored or dead?  If you observe these signs, you might have a leak in your oil tank.

Next, what about the condition of the oil tank itself?  Oil tanks are very heavy, so they need to have adequate support.  Ensure the supporting legs are not uneven or rusting in any places.  Do you see any discolored patches of metal on the tank or does it look like it has been patched up in the past?  These are all signs the oil tank might not be in good shape.

An above ground oil tank is subject to extremes of bad weather which could start to cause damage.  Try to make sure snow, ice or water is not continuously dripping or falling on it.

If you have any disconnected fuel lines, check them for insects and nests etc.  These would cause a blockage if not removed.

Its important an above ground oil tank is well maintained.  Failure to do so could, not only create problems for your heating, but could also have a negative impact environmentally.
