Burglars are opportunists who will look for any weak spots on your property that they could use to gain access to your home. For your home to be a more secure place you need to make it as unattractive as possible to a would-be intruder. Let’s consider some of the ways you can do this.

To start with, plan out the landscaping in your yard in such a way that it would discourage a burglar. For example, you should not cover the home’s entrance or windows with trees and shrubs as this will provide a good cover for anyone who is trying to break into the house. If you decide to put fencing around the property this can be a good deterrent but, again, make sure it does not provide a shield for a would-be intruder.

The home’s exterior doors should be made of solid construction with good deadbolt locks. Windows should also be constructed of solid materials with strong glass and show no signs of deterioration. In regions most at risk of intruders, you could install heavy-duty wire screens or window bars. If you decide on this option, though, make sure that the home’s occupants would be able to easily exit the windows in the event of an emergency.

Sliding glass doors should be made secure with locks on both the top and bottom of the doors. You may also want to place a piece of wood, such as a cut off broom handle, into the doors track which will block it from being opened.

Burglars like to remain unseen and do not want to be spotted by neighbors or passersby, so lighting is a very effective deterrent. It is a good idea to install lighting on every side of the home and have them fitted with motion sensors. If you are going to be away from home, leave a few lights on in the house to give the impression that you are in.

These few suggestions will help to make your home as unappealing to an intruder as possible.
